VOICE OF THE NEW GENERATION

The Tie that binds. . . . .

By Flora Mae Doplayna

Have you ever thought of why friends stick together through thick and thin and through the years? why some friendships can overcome time and space? Well, here is a list to answer both questions. Discover the wonderful world of the tie that binds... friendship.

1. FRIENDSHIP IS VOLUNTARY. This means that individuals don't have to be dragged into them. They are involved because they want to. They choose to spend time and effort with friends.

2. FRIENDSHIP IS INFORMAL. Friends don't make rules. They let relationship develop pretty much on its own. There's no specific intention unlike relationships such as hiring an employee or selecting a spouse.

3. FRIENDSHIP IS DYNAMIC. Since individuals change, friendships shift and change, too. Some friendship zips along at a fast pace while others creep. Some last for a long time, others are here today, gone tomorrow. Thus, there are friends who can still grow together although they are far apart and there are those who may be near to each other but seems to grow farther apart a time goes by.

4. FRIENDSHIP IS SATISFYING. If a relationship is more heartache than good times, it won't last. It's got to be enjoyed by both parties. The people involved need not be satisfied consistently with the relationship but need to be happy with it often than not.

5. FRIENDSHIP INVOLVES COMMUNICATION. Friends should establish open lines of communication. This will provide a primary bridge between them, to pave the way for sharing, warmth, mutual support, and problem solving. Friends are not merely casual acquaintances but they are establishing relationships on a deeper level to develop a foundation for a growing loyalty, trust and respect among them.

6. FRIENDSHIP INVOLVES MUTUAL ACCEPTANCE. Friends accept each other. They remain loyal even when a friend's actions are insulting, ridiculous, absurd, socially obnoxious or frustrating even though they may disagree from time, preferring to let each other grow and develop in the direction they wish. Real friends, even if they get mad, shout or scream at each other, accept each other for who they are and for what they're not.

7. FRIENDSHIP ENJOY EACH OTHER'S COMPANY. They give fully of their own and do myriad of other things at times subtle, at other times obvious that they convey this linking back and forth.
