Capiz population up to 654,156 in 2000
ROXAS CITY -- The population of Capiz totalled to 654,156 as of May 1, 2000 based on the the final results of the 2000 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the National Statistic Office.
The results, according to information officer Frankie Dordas, showed that there was an increase of 29,687 persons over the 1995 figure of 624,569 (with September 1, 1995 as reference date), and by 70,065 over the 1990 census count of 584,091 persons.
The Census results further revealed that the province's annual growth rate experienced a downtrend, as it only grew by 1 percent in the second half of the nineties compared 101.26 percent between 1990 and 1995.
During said period, the population increased by 6,356 every year on the average, or roughly 17 persons per day, Dordas observed.
On the other hand, the number of households in Capiz increased to 128,554 or by 8,669 from 119,885 household in 1995.
The average household size decreased slightly to 5.09 persons from the 1995 figure of 5.21 persons, which implies that for every 100 households, the number of members decreased by 12 persons, the census result disclosed.
Dordas pointed out that Roxas City registered some 126,352 inhabitants in 2000. For municipalities, he said, Tapaz still registered the largest population of 44,084 persons, followed by Panay with 40,599.
Dumarao town had a total population of 40,303, and Pontevedra had 40,103. The smallest population was noted in Sapian with only 22,912 persons.
On national figures, the Philippine population was posted at 76,498,735. These results, Dordas said, are now made official with the signing of Presidential Proclamation No. 28 on April 18, 2001.
He explained that the official proclamation of the population counts by barangay is among the provisions of Batas Pambansa Blg. 72, mandating the conduct of the nationwide census on years ending with "0" (PIA/JBGuillermo).
